some haiku

so close to death
each word on the
switch of the electric chair

you suffer so
I have learned calmly
to absorb your screams

bowing deeply
everything before me
thanking with my eyes

air conditioner
cradled in kitchen window
kitten’s healthy teeth

finger runs across
sentences as a guide
toil information aged

sea shell ocean in my
ears sleeping
Billie Holiday every day
